4.5✨s – Have you ever watched “Deadliest Catch” on TV? I loved it when episodes showed Coast Guard rescues. This story gave me the same intense feeling, plus the added suspense of a mystery. I was fascinated through the whole story with the setting in Alaska, descriptions of the terrain and thrilling rescue action. Dan, the new rescue swimmer, arrives at the station and right away there’s sparks between him and Karl but mostly suspicion, on both sides, to start with. Many of Dan’s actions are a little odd but Karl begins to make guesses and tries to develop trust with Dan, even helping him a bit when he can. Their friendship grows slowly but steadily, along with the progression of the plot.
It’s a good mystery, with enough misdirection to keep the reader guessing until the scope is revealed, culminating in a breathtaking finish. The author has obviously done extensive research because the details and descriptions of the Coast Guard procedures all rang true. I liked the development of Dan and Karl as characters, as well as the secondary players and their dynamics. My only objection was the single sex scene. I didn’t expect a lot of sex or anything but the scene shown was in the worst time and place, and just made no sense to me. There were so many other opportunities to create a passionate and more tender scene, if necessary. It was a fun read altogether and I’d recommend it pretty highly.
About Elle Brownlee:
Author. Snarky romantic. Tea drinker. Elle Brownlee has always followed her creative, adventuring spirit. She loves rainy days in autumn, National Parks, spirited discussions over boozy brunch, and long walks on practically anywhere. Growing up she loved westerns and taking long hikes. On these explorations she’d craft miniature worlds with moss and rocks while making up stories about everything that happened there. This often included dashing cowboy heroes. As an adult, not a lot has changed. She still loves westerns, long hikes, and allowing her imagination to roam. She also loves spending time with family and friends, rooting for her baseball team, rainy days in autumn, and the perfect cup of tea (black, steeped extra strong, with milk—please!). Her romances feature flawed but relatable characters in immersive settings, told with wit, tenderness, and a sly note of sarcasm. Though a cynic in many ways, Elle believes love can conquer all. Every story is a little bit naughty, a whole lot of nice, and will always end with happily ever after. Elle currently lives in New York City, where she maintains her miniature worlds in terrariums and writing. She’s so thankful to be able to share her work with a growing audience, and especially grateful to have you reading along.
