Something in Jake’s relationship with Connor is changing, and not for the better. The only thing that’s been growing between them recently is silence, and when Connor starts lying about where he’s been and slipping out of bed at night, Jake fears the worst.
Jake gets the surprise of his life when he finds out what Connor has really been doing. It couldn’t be further from what he’d expected. Instead of ending the relationship, Connor has been building up to taking the next step together with a huge romantic surprise for Jake.
The scare shows Jake what’s really important, and the ordeal might make them stronger and bring them closer together than ever before.
4✨s – Jake and Connor are college sweethearts, but when Connor starts spending more and more time away from their apartment Jake gets concerned they may be heading towards a breakup. Jake catches Connor in a lie and he starts to think that maybe Connor is cheating on him. What’s really happening though is Connor has been planning a wonderful romantic night and finding the perfect place for them to live.
This short story is sweet and the ending is wonderfully romantic. A little background as to why Jake would jump to the conclusion that Connor is cheating would have been nice, but for a short story the author packs in a lot of good stuff. I enjoyed the authors balance of doubt and reflection with the wonderful happiness and love in the end.
Bru Baker has been writing for Dreamspinner Press since December 2012. She believes in Happily Ever Afters, but she almost always makes her characters work to get there. She and her husband live in the Midwest with their two young children, whose antics make finding time to write difficult but never let life get boring.
